Commercial and Municipal Water Audit and Survey

United Leak Detection is your single source for  leak inspection solutions. We can provide help with leak surveys so that you can determine what leaks you may have and how you can methodically find and repair them to reduce your water usage.

During the Water Audit expect to gather infomation regarding your water usage including:

  • Where did we lose the water?
  • How was the volume of water lost?
  • How much did the loss cost us?
  • Why did we lose the water?
  • Once the leak audit is complete, the plans for leak survey can begin. A leak survey involves the systematic examination of water pipeline and mains throughout the distribution system. Acoustical surveying is often the first step in identifiying lengths of pipes that are suspected of leaking. Once leaks are heard along pipelines, correlation technology and trace gas detection can be used to verify the exact location of leaks. Correlation technology is useful if detailed information is available as to the type and diameter of the pipeline in question. If the type of pipe, or pipe diameter are not known for certain, trace gas detection will locate leaks within inches no matter the depth of the pipe.

Among the tools we use to find leaks are

Helium Detection: For some pipes, introducing water into the pipe is not the preferred way to locate leaks. Helium detection can save money by introducing a an inert gas into the pipes that will not react with petroleum, natural gas or other contents. Pipes are pressurized with helium and it escapes through the leak.  Using a specially calibrated detection unit, our experts are able to track where the helium escapes from the concrete, the wall or the soil. Our detectors are so sensitive they can detect helium concentrations as low as 5 parts per million!

Ultrasound Technology: This technology can be used one of two ways.  First, in a pressurized water pipe, a leak will very often make a noise specific to the type of leak.  We use ultrasound technology to pinpoint the exact location of the sound and find the leak.  Also, we can provide the pressure to the system by pressurizing the lines with air.  The air will then escape through the leak, and the ultrasound technology can be used to pinpoint the sound of the escaping air. In the hands of our well-skilled operators, this is one of the most useful types of leak detection.

Correlation Technology: Correlation technology utilizes If two highly sensitive microphones are attached to two different locations on a pipe. Because a leak in a pipe under pressure creates noise that travels through the pipe walls, the surrounding ground and along the contents of the pipe, the microphones allow for a "correlation" calculation to determine the speed at which the noise travels along the pipe, and the differences in this speed can allow determination of the exact location of the leak in the pipeline.

Line Location: this machine tracks electrical signals that allow us to locate the pipes underground so that we can continue to look in the right places for leaks. Our skilled operators can follow the signals and map our line locations of line after line.
